It counts over 12,000 students and 5,000 scientists in 7 faculties active in domains from humanities and social sciences to natural sciences. Research at university is increasingly data-driven and thus requires state-of-the-art services to support data-science applications, often with transdisciplinary approaches. sciCORE is the center for scientific computing offering the infrastructure and expertise to facilitate data-driven research. As part of its support activities, sciCORE is maintaining various data management systems, offered as a service to streamline the data life cycle in research projects. We are in particular consolidating an environment, based on the data management system LabKey, to integrate data and metadata from several technology platforms at the university (sequencing, proteomics, biobanks, imaging, etc.) with other structured data generated in research projects. Although sciCORE is rooted in life sciences, we are opening our data management service to other domains working with structured data. Fully-funded PhD position in Near & Middle Eastern StudiesDate of appointment October 1, 2024The Seminar for Near and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Basel is offering one fully-funded doctoral position for the research project Futures Interrupted: social pluralism and political projects beyond coloniality and the nation-state. This five-year project, started in January 2024, is led by Falestin Naïli (principal investigator) and is funded through a Swiss National Science Foundation Consolidator grant. The project: This collective project aims to renew our perspective on the period between the end of the Ottoman Empire and the beginning of the age of nations in the Arab world by paying particular attention to local actors. The focus on unrealized social and political projects promoted by local actors allows us a look at the Arab world beyond the colonial framework and beyond the prevailing nation-state model. It also offers a view of alternative articulations of belonging and political community, using case-studies stretching from North Africa to South West Asia and the Arabian Peninsula. Futures Interrupted will be particularly attentive to the ways in which these unimplemented or unfinished projects dealt with the social pluralism which characterized the region at that time and which, in many parts of the area, was upset by the colonial division into separate states that occurred mostly after the First World War. The project will follow a bottom-up approach, proceeding from daily life and practice and moving up to social and political movements. It will be source-driven, not theory-driven, while engaging critically with existing social and political theory. Its objective is to enrich the pool of concepts at the disposal of political science and sociology through a grounded historical analysis of social and political imaginaries in the Arab world. This implies the search for new types of sources, specifically in order to document non-elite experiences and imaginaries. The crossing of a great variety of archival sources will bring into dialogue the different levels of discourse, activism and constraint linked to political action. Oral history will occupy a particularly important place within the research strategy, since it allows access to narratives of social groups which rarely leave written sources. Given the chronology of the project, this will entail the analysis of existing oral history archives, in addition to interviews with the remaining witnesses of the last two decades under study (1940s to 1960s). Poems, songs, ego-documents and self-narratives will constitute another source for the analysis of idioms of belonging, community and political action. Details about the research project: https://nahoststudien.philhist.unibas.ch/de/forschung/forschungsprojekte/futures-interrupted/Your positionThe doctoral position is intended for a project dealing with unimplemented projects for anticolonial emancipation and liberation in the context of the last few decades of French colonial rule in Algeria and how they took into account the social pluralism of Algerian society.Your profileMA in history and/or Middle Eastern studiesSolid knowledge of English, French and Arabic (Algerian dialect and/ or Amazigh language a plus)The selected candidate will actively participate in the discussions and events organized within the programme in Basel and abroad. Background and/or interests include (but are not limited to): political, social history or intellectual history of the modern Arab world, colonial history, the late Ottoman Empire, transition between Empire and nation-states, non-elite agency, belonging, coexistence, citizenship, Algerian history. We offer youA joint research project of the University of BaselMembership in Graduate School of Social Sciences (G3S)An international research environmentA competitive salary according to the pay scale of the University of BaselContract Duration: 4 years (2024–2028)Working Time: 100% (full time)The employment conditions follow the guidelines of the university

PhD position in social acceptance of artificial and sustainable fuels100%, 1.8.2024The Sustainability Research Group at the University of Basel is looking for one PhD candidate to investigate social acceptance of artificial and sustainable fuels.Your positionThe political support of conventional biofuels has illustrated that national legislation (e.g., in the USA or the EU) has global socio-economic as well as environmental implications. Aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, several political institutions have launched strategies to foster the use of sustainable fuels and platform chemicals (SFPCs), i.e. carbon-free fuels (e.g., through hydrogen or ammonia) or carbon-neutral fuels (e.g., fuels containing non-fossil carbon from biomass). Within the framework of the project, sustainable fuels (SF) are defined to be fuels that meet a set of environmental and social sustainability criteria. While most SFPCs are expected to be imported to Switzerland, implications on international markets, social impacts (e.g., food security), and indirect environmental effects (e.g., global land-use change) depend on the technology pathway and are unknown. The goal of the PhD position is to contribute to a better understanding of the societal perspective in relation to sustainable fuels. The works will be embedded in the Swiss Federal Office of Agriculture SWEET-funded project "ReFuel.ch". Specifically, the PhD will examine social acceptance of different technological pathways and possible related environmental and socio-economic impacts in Switzerland. In order to do so, there is a need for both qualitative and quantitative assessment of consumer attitudes and demand intention (acceptance) for sustainable fuels and platform chemicals (SFPC), to understand assessment pathways and uptake scenarios. Expected tasks include undertaking two online surveys (one including an experiment) to identify preferences with respect to different identified and legally feasible policy options, general acceptance, attitudes and other potential determinants of future acceptance. In combination with others, a policy report outlining best practices on SFPC promotion and implications for Switzerland will be prepared. Research activities will form the basis of multiple academic research papers for a PhD.The appointment is scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024.Your profileApplicants must possess an academic qualification (MSc/MA) in the social sciences, and should have experience with relevant empirical methods (particularly quantitative research skills are expected and qualitative research skills are desired).A proficient level in English and German, excellent communication skills and a willingness to collaborate are essential. We offer youThe position is for an initial period of one year, renewable for another three years after positive evaluation. As the research project is a collaborative effort between 16 research teams across Switzerland and hosted at the very interdisciplinary Sustainability Research Group of the University of Basel, you will be able to work in a scientifically highly stimulating environment. You will join a supportive, collaborative and cooperative work environment with regular meetings and exchanges. We support participation in a broad and well-established international research network. Further, we offer modern research facilities and an excellent scientific environment at Basel University. Salary and social benefits are provided according to the University of Basel rules. You will be co-supervised by Dr Iljana Schubert, Dr Annika Sohre & Professor Janina Grabs (appointed head of the Sustainability Research Group).

PhD student position in Computer VisionThe Department of Ancient Civilizations of the University of Basel invites applications for one PhD student position (100%) in Computer Vision for 3 years on the topic of offline to online conversion of historical handwritings within the SNSF-funded research project 'Egrapsa: Retracing the evolutions of handwritings in Greco-Roman Egypt thanks to digital palaeography'.Deadline for application: April 23, 2024.Beginning of the position: September 01, 2024 (ideally).Work place: Basel (Switzerland)Salary: approx. 50'000 Swiss francs per yearThe interviews are expected to take place beginning of May online via Zoom. The projectPapyri preserved by the dry climate of Egypt are an unparalleled source of information about the Ancient World. However, their large number, diversity and current dispersion have impeded a comprehensive grasp of their nature and content. In particular, palaeography, the study of handwritings that has the potential to unveil where, when, and by whom a text was written, still relies on experts' assertions that rarely reach consensus. New technological advances in Computer Science, notably in Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing now allow building the big picture of the writing culture of Greco-Roman Egypt and developing scientific analyses of scripts. Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation for five years, the Starting Grant project EGRAPSA (literally ?I have written" in Ancient Greek) aims at providing a new theoretical framework to the palaeography of Greek papyri. Starting from sound evidence, it aims at retracing the evolutions of handwritings, generating a model that, in turn, can contribute to organizing the papyrological documentation in a coherent panorama, improving the solidity of dates and writer identifications made on palaeographical grounds. The ground-breaking dimension of the project is to encompass the entire papyrological documentation in its full complexity to measure similarities and explain evolutions by focusing on the reconstruction of the dynamics of writing, thus to literally re-trace handwritings. For further information, see the project website https://d-scribes.philhist.unibas.ch/en/.Your positionThe PhD student will be fully funded for a period of three years, be registered as a PhD student at the University of Basel, and work under the co-supervision of Prof. Isabelle Marthot-Santaniello (Department of Ancient Civilizations) and of Prof. Ivan Dokmani? (Department of Mathematics and Computer Science) with support from the Center for Data Analytics (CeDA). The PhD dissertation project will focus on how to experimentally capture hypothetical ductus (stroke order and direction of writing) reconstructed by experts and to design deep learning pipelines as well as experimental protocols to acquire and compare ductus reconstitutions. In addition, the PhD student will take part in the team's discussions on the history and evolutions of Greek handwritings across a millennium. She/he will help organize – jointly with the team – a number of workshops and conferences, participate in outreach activities of the project and present her/his research at scientific meetings. Your profileApplicants should hold a Master's degree in Computer Vision or related fields with grades above average (Master's thesis must be completed by the start of the position), be highly motivated to conduct innovative transdisciplinary research at the intersections of Artificial Intelligence, Kinematics, Digital Humanities and Ancient History, have an excellent command of at least English, and be able to work autonomously within an internationally and institutionally diverse environment. We offer youThe project is based in the Department of Ancient Civilizations and conducted in collaboration with the Center for Data Analytics led by Prof. Ivan Dokmani? at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The collaborative nature of the project ensures that the successful candidate will be immersed in a stimulating machine learning research environment, with cutting-edge infrastructure for high-performance computing provisioned by sciCORE – the Center for Scientific Computing. The salary and employment conditions will be those of PhD students at the University of Basel.

Postdoc position in Sustainability Research Group75%, 01.08.2024The Sustainability Research Group at the University of Basel, led by Prof. Dr. Janina Grabs, is looking for one postdoctoral researcher to investigate the governance of sustainable agri-food systems, with a particular focus on the implementation of mandatory sustainability legislation in tropical agri-food commodity chains.Your positionThe production of agricultural commodities such as coffee, cocoa, or palm oil is associated with persistent environmental and social problems, including deforestation, forced and child labor, and smallholder poverty. Transforming agri-food systems is thus a major sustainable development challenge. European governments currently aim to do so via the introduction of mandatory supply chain sustainability legislation such as due diligence regulations and import restrictions. Such legislation requires companies to provide granular insights on environmental and human rights-related risks in their supply chains, and gives them responsibility for risk mitigation and remediation in production sites. Select laws also prohibit companies from importing products associated with negative impacts such as deforestation or forced labor.Despite legislators' best intentions, there are concerns that this new generation of regulations will not be effective in reducing the harms embedded in global supply chains, and might even exacerbate them. The intended transformation toward more sustainable agri-food trade will rely on how successfully supply chain actors coordinate in building more transparent and responsible value chains. How do businesses adjust their behavior to move into compliance? How do these preparatory steps change value chain organization, power dynamics and smallholder livelihood outcomes in tropical agri-food value chains? And what effects does the legislation have on intended goals, i.e. the improvement of human rights and environmental outcomes in producing countries? You will answer these questions via a combination of qualitative (e.g. expert interviews, Q-methodology, case study analysis) and/or quantitative (e.g. company or producer surveys) research on policy implementation in tropical agri-food commodity sectors such as coffee, cocoa, and palm oil. In addition to a global-level analysis, field research in one producing country (e.g. Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire) is expected and budgeted for. The specific project, including the fieldwork locations, will be tailored to the interests and skills of the successful candidate. You will also be integrated into broader, externally funded research projects that are currently under review, and will mentor Master's and doctoral students as part of such projects. You will further gain teaching experience by teaching three hours/week (during the semester) of graduate-level courses in the Master's in Sustainable Development (MSD) program of the University of Basel.Your profileApplicants should have completed a PhD in a relevant field such as political science, political economy, public policy/administration, global governance, sustainability research, sociology, or another social science discipline. The candidate should have demonstrated experience in the use of qualitative and/or quantitative research methods, and ideally have experience in conducting fieldwork in smallholder producer contexts. We are looking for someone with a proficient level in English as well a second language (e.g. Spanish, French, Bahasa Indonesia), excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a strong work ethic, the ability to work independently, and a high willingness to collaborate. We offer youThe appointment is scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024, or at the earliest convenience thereafter of the successful candidate. This position is for an initial period of two years, renewable for another four years after positive evaluation. The place of work is Basel, Switzerland. As part of the very interdisciplinary Sustainability Research Group of the University of Basel, you will be able to work in a scientifically highly stimulating environment. You will join a supportive, collaborative and cooperative work environment with regular meetings and exchanges. Postdoc Position: Advanced photonics for ultrafast chiral spectroscopyThe Ultrafast Chiral Dynamics Laboratory at University of Basel, led by Prof. Malte Oppermann, develops time-resolved laser spectroscopy techniques to capture both the structural and electronic evolution of chiral molecular systems during their (bio-)chemical activity in real-time. We are looking for a creative and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a background in ultrafast spectroscopy to join our interdisciplinary team.Laboratory website: https://oppermann.chemie.unibas.ch/en/Project backgroundTo capture molecular dynamics in real-time we need experimental techniques that offer both high structural and fast time resolution. However, achieving this in the native solution phase of most (bio-)chemical processes remains a formidable experimental challenge – especially on the fastest time scales of molecular motion. To address this, our team has developed a new spectroscopic approach. We use broadband circularly polarized laser pulses to capture changes in the structural symmetry of molecules, called chirality, to resolve the enconded conformational dynamics with femtosecond time resolution [1]. This has opened the path to resolve the structural dynamics of (bio-)molecular systems [2] and to study the chirality of electronic excited states for controlling photochemical processes [3]. To expand the scope of our research, we are now implementing a new ultrafast chiral spectroscopy platform at University of Basel, making use of the latest developments in laser and photonic technology.[1] M. Oppermann, B. Bauer, T. Rossi, F. Zinna, J. Helbing, J. Lacour, and M. Chergui, Optica 6, 1, 56-60 (2019). https://doi.org/10.1364/OPTICA.6.000056[2] M. Oppermann, J. Spekowius, B. Bauer, R. Chem. 14, 739-745 (2022).https://doi.org/10.1038/s41557-022-00933-0Your positionIn close collaboration with the Dr. Chris Brahms and the LUPO group at Heriot-Watt University, we are currently implementing a customized hollow-core fiber-based laser source for generating ultra-broadband femtosecond pulses with unique access to the far ultraviolet (UV) regime. Coupled to our approach to ultrafast chiral spectroscopy, we will capture the electronic and structural dynamics encoded in important UV-chromophores, such as nucleobases in DNA, amino acids and peptide bonds in proteins and small organic ligands in molecular systems. On this basis, the candidate will support the design and implementation of new ultrafast spectroscopy instruments and contribute to our ongoing research on chiral photochemistry. Together with a large network of collaborators, our team currently focuses on three system classes: chiral luminescent materials, chiral photoswitches and chiral metal nanoclusters. Going forward, the successful candidate is encouraged to develop their own research as part our program. The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and a Royal Society International Exchange Grant. The initial duration of the position is 3 years and is available immediately, while the starting date is flexible. The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found, so we encourage interested candidates to apply as soon as possible.Your profileWe are looking for a highly motivated and pro-active candidate with a Ph.D. in physics or chemistry and research experience in ultrafast spectroscopy. This position is especially suitable for a candidate with a strong interest in experimental method development and interdisciplinary research at the intersection between physics and chemistry. Our research is highly collaborative, so we strive for an inclusive, supportive, and enthusiastic work environment that values a team with diverse interests and personal backgrounds (for further details, please see the Diversity & Inclusion Principles of University of Basel).Skills and experience in any of the following areas would be especially valuable:Hands-on experience in ultrafast laser spectroscopyResearch experience in photochemistry or -physicsHardware control via LabView, Matlab, Python or similarData analysis with common programming languages such as Matlab or PythonResearch project management and student supervisionWe offer youA highly interdisciplinary and collaborative work environment in a young research groupState-of-the art ultrafast spectroscopy equipment and research infrastructureCoaching and support for personal career developmentExcellent salary, benefits and working conditions following Swiss university standardsBasel offers a truly international environment, bordering with France and Germany, a wide range of cultural activities and an exceptional quality of life
